Dr. James Still, the “Black Doctor of the Pines” lived during a time when blacks were in slavery, people of color were not allowed to go to medical school and racism was not only legal, but also the norm– yet he didn’t let these obstacles stop him from practicing medicine in Medford, NJ. In fact, his practice became so successful he became one of the biggest landowners and richest man in Burlington County.
